Mindanao

The Mindanao region of the Philippines is rich in cultural heritage, heavily influenced by Islamic traditions, and is home to various ethnic groups such as the Maranao, Maguindanao, and Tausug. Costumes include richly adorned silk garments—women wear the malong and patadyong, often accessorized with gold-colored jewelry and headdresses, reflecting royal attire. The dances from the Mindanao region not only showcase elegance and agility but also tell stories of nobility, daily life, and spiritual traditions rooted in Mindanao culture.

Singkil is a traditional Filipino dance from the Maranao people of Mindanao, based on a scene from the epic Darangen. It tells the story of Princess Gandingan, who gets trapped in a forest during an earthquake, and is later rescued by Prince Bantugan. Dancers step gracefully between clapping bamboo poles, symbolizing falling trees, while wearing colorful costumes and moving to the rhythm of traditional gong music. Singkil symbolizes nobility, bravery, and chaos and order.
