Maria Clara

Three words that define Maria Clara: love, elegance, and charm. This dance suite is influenced by traditional Spanish and European dances such as the waltz, mazurka, polka, and jota, which were newly introduced to the Philippines at the time. The Filipinos welcomed these dances, adding native flair and style, while making them their own. The Maria Clara suite is named in honor of the legendary female character Maria Clara from José Rizal’s novel Noli Me Tangere. She embodies the virtues and nobility upheld by the traditional Filipina woman and embodies the elegance and charm of Filipinas, as well as the gallantry and boldness of Filipinos.
